We offer Functional Skills qualifications, an alternative to mainstream GCSE’s in English and Maths, compulsory for all students that are enrolled, and all will be expected to work towards this standard.
The curriculum is designed to enable all students to make progress. It is adaptable to cater for individual needs and demanding enough to enable students to draw out their maximum potential.
We emphasise qualifications in Employability skills, which are available to every student preparing them for their working life.
Our aim is for students to successfully complete their education feeling invigorated and READY to continue their employment journey.
Reading – Students will understand the difference between Fact and Opinion. They will explore different writing styles, know the different levels of detail required and pick out key detail from text as well as explain Implied Meanings.
Writing – Students will learn to write in Paragraphs and Organise their writing with structure. They will Communicate Information, Ideas and Opinions in written form. Students will use different types of language based on different scenarios.
Speaking and Listening – Students will make a range of contributions to discussions in a range of contexts, including those that are unfamiliar, and make effective presentations
Students need all 3 elements to obtain the qualification.

Measure – Shape and Space
Handling Information – Data and Statistics.
Students will be encouraged to use both written and mental methods of problem solving.
Students will need to pass a final exam.

Students will learn skills such as word processing, spreadsheets and databases. They will understand the health and safety measures for using the internet and how to secure devices. Students will be expected to use email and understand the aspects of file management.
We offer additional Vocational course options of the following subjects:
Students will learn a skill, practice, and then apply it to a task. Students will experience Bricklaying, Carpentry and Joinery, Painting and Decorating, Plastering, Plumbing and Tiling.

Students will gain experience in both Car and Cycle maintenance including the relevant legislation applicable.

ReFocus is lucky enough to have a garden and students will be actively involved in growing and planting both flowers and vegetables. Students will also learn how to look after indoor plants as well as the properties of certain plants and how they can help support health.

This incorporates our PSHE curriculum and includes both humanities and creative arts. Students will look at protected characteristics, British values, look at what is important for their well-being as well as how they fit in to the world they live in.

All students will have employability lessons; these support the construction qualification as they make up a portion of the credits required. These lessons challenge students to understand the world of work and help them develop as a well-rounded adult.

SMSC will be delivered to pupils enabling students to interact with others in a positive way.
